Sauveterre Beach, France - Officially Recognised Nude Beach

	Sauveterre Beach is another expansive golden sandy beach backed by dunes, about 7km west of Olonne-sur-Mer on France's Vendee coast. There are signs marking the official naturist section of the beach, although naturists are often found on the non-nudist area of the beach too. There is a large car park nearby and a couple of bars on the beach, but no toilets.

SAUVETERRE BEACH NUDE REPORTS:

1. This is an official beach that is reached by turning at the traffic lights in Olonne-sur-Mer just before the Sauveterre camp site and following the signs to the beach (Plage). The road winds through the pine forest and is littered with numerous shaded picnic areas en-route. There is a large car park on the forest side of the dunes and this gets very busy during peak holiday times with visitors having to resort to parking along the access road later during the day. Follow the usual boardwalk over the dunes and the naturist beach (plage naturiste) is signposted to the right of the beach access. Although the official naturist area is signposted some 400 metres from the beach access, integration of nudists and non-nudists start someway before the sign. The beach is relatively wide and clean, backed by dunes through which there are some footpaths but many forbidden areas due to coastal erosion. The beach is frequented by mainly families and couples but male groups do frequent to the extreme end of the area. The naturist area of the beach is not covered by the lifeguards, who only look after the non-nudist area. The waves are good for surfing and bodyboarding but care should be taken as there are rocks in some areas and strong cross-currents at times. There are a couple of beach bars and cafes close to the entrance from the carpark and occasional beach vendors selling cold drinks, ice creams and beignettes wander the beach. There are no toilet facilities at the beach. - AJ (December 2005)
